چکیده

Using density-functional theory, we computed all the independent elastic constants of coesite, a high-pressure polymorph of silica, as functions of pressure up to 15 GPa. The results are in good agreement with experimental measurements under ambient conditions. Also, the predicted pressure-dependent elastic properties are consistent with x-ray data in the literature concerning lattice strains at high pressures. We find that coesite, like quartz, exhibits a gradual softening of a shear modulus B44 with increasing pressure, in contrast to the rising bulk modulus. © 2008 American Institute of Physics. Multiple pathways in pressure-induced phase transition of coesite.

High-pressure single-crystal X-ray diffraction method with precise control of hydrostatic conditions, typically with helium or neon as the pressure-transmitting medium, has significantly changed our view on what happens with low-density silica phases under pressure. Coesite is a prototype material for pressure-induced amorphization. However, it was found to transform into a high-pressure octahe...

ELASTIC CONSTANTS OF ICE Ih, UP TO 2.8 KBAR, BY BRILLOUIN SPECTROSCOPY

The technique of high resolution Brillouin spectroscopy has been used to determine accurately the hydrostatic pressure dependence of the elastic constants of ice Ih in the full pressure range of phase stability 0 2.8 kbar. The percentage changes in the adiabatic elastic constants c,,, cI2. cI3, cS3, c,, and bulk modulus, over the pressure range, are 3.0, 7.2, 8.4, 2.8, -1.5 and 5.6 percent per ...

Compressional pathways of α-cristobalite, structure of cristobalite X-I, and towards the understanding of seifertite formation

In various shocked meteorites, low-pressure silica polymorph α-cristobalite is commonly found in close spatial relation with the densest known SiO2 polymorph seifertite, which is stable above ∼80 GPa. We demonstrate that under hydrostatic pressure α-cristobalite remains untransformed up to at least 15 GPa. In quasi-hydrostatic experiments, above 11 GPa cristobalite X-I forms-a monoclinic polymo...

Coesite and stishovite in a shocked lunar meteorite, Asuka-881757, and impact events in lunar surface.

Microcrystals of coesite and stishovite were discovered as inclusions in amorphous silica grains in shocked melt pockets of a lunar meteorite Asuka-881757 by micro-Raman spectrometry, scanning electron microscopy, electron back-scatter diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. These high-pressure polymorphs of SiO(2) in amorphous silica indicate that the meteorite experienced an equili...
